  5. Thinking about Joe lately, ruminating.

I heard a Rabbi say at a funeral once that "memory is the library of the mind and remembrance is the library of the soul".

So doing a bit of remembrance about Joe, the first things that pop out are humour, generosity, free floating irascibility.

Charming wonderful and unforgettable. All good stuff.

But then Joe used to let me get up on stage and play 'Johnny Be Goode' at various joints he was playing at. The Chinese restaurant country music dive Joe and Mike and Gerry used to play at...I still have a photo of it somewhere.

He told some good bad jokes. "You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille. With 400 children and a crotch that won't heal".

    Classic stuff.

When he needed help hitting a high note, he was not above making certain very subtle anatomical adjustments allowing him to get there. Which the crowd appreciated, exchanging nods of approval.

Joe's most impressive trait, for me, was his poise as a musician. He could handle the focus. Even when he didn't know for sure what was next.

There he was playing electric guitar on a song he was hearing for the first time. Here came the solo. He was unperturbed. He always seemed to be chewing something, looking straight ahead, ready for the next chord to change and trying to land on the right notes.

And even if he missed a note he quickly built a bridge to a better note. He didn't sweat it. He knew that a moment was coming right after this moment and he would be okay in that one too.

Thanks for showing me what poise looks like and how it works, Joe. Say hi to Grant.
